Longest river in Europe; 3,685 km/2,290 mi,
3,540 km/2,200 mi of which are navigable. It
drains most of the central and eastern parts
of European USSR, rises in the Valdai
plateau, and flows into the Caspian Sea 88
km/55 mi below Astrakhan. The Soviet Union is
going ahead with plans for diverting water
from N-flowing rivers, E and W of the Urals,
to irrigate the croplands of central Asia.
Diversion of water into the S-flowing Volga
from the Sukhona River and surrounding lakes
is due for completion 1990. A canal
stretching 2,415 km/1,500 mi from the river
Ob to Amu Darya is still in the planning
stage.
